Archive No. 102 — One of a Kind | Hand-Loomed Cusco Highlands

No. 102 opens a room the way a conversation starter opens a room. A rhythmic arrangement of fuchsia and clementine — two of the most demanding pigments to preserve in vintage Andean wool — maintained at full saturation across both panels with an uncommon degree of chromatic consistency. This is highland ceremonial color sequencing at its most direct.

Provenance & archival notes

No. 102 was admitted into the archive for its structural permanence and the rare preservation of its vibrant tonal registers — characteristics increasingly absent in surviving mid-century Frazadas due to dye fading and environmental wear. Most vintage Frazadas that originally featured high-intensity fuchsia and orange have faded significantly over time. No. 102 demonstrates an uncommon degree of chromatic consistency across its entire dual-panel construction — the saturation you see today is the saturation the weaver achieved at the loom.

Hand-loomed in the high-altitude Cusco highlands on a traditional backstrap loom. The rhythmic stripe arrangement of No. 102 reflects the high-contrast chromatic sequencing characteristic of highland ceremonial textile traditions — color used not as decoration but as cultural language. The central union seam is secure and the edge binding intact.

Originally engineered as a heavy-duty thermal barrier for Andean winters. Decades of authentic use have softened the hand-spun sheep wool into an heirloom patina that new production cannot replicate — the fiber has taken on a suppleness that is felt as much as seen. Acquired directly from Cusco, Peru. One of a kind — when this piece sells, it is gone.

Curator's notes
  • Pigment depth: Selected for the exceptional saturation of its fuchsia and clementine coloration — an unusually preserved example of high-intensity Andean dye work. The chromatic consistency across both panels is rare in surviving pieces of this era.
  • Structural weight: A high-density weave that retains the wool's natural lanolin and substantial hand-spun weight — denser and heavier than most surviving pieces of comparable scale.
  • Architectural placement: The symmetrical stripe arrangement is equally compelling on a floor or a wall — the fuchsia and clementine rhythm reads with equal authority in both orientations.
Interior design application

No. 102 is for the room that is ready to commit to color. The fuchsia and clementine palette performs best in maximalist, dopamine decor, eclectic, and contemporary interiors where bold warm color is the design language. It also works as a single electric object in a neutral room — one saturated Frazada against white plaster or concrete that carries the entire color story of the space.

At 67" x 58" it anchors a living room seating area, a dining space, or a reading corner with authority. Mounted vertically the symmetrical stripe arrangement creates a balanced vertical composition — particularly effective as an architectural wall installation in a gallery-style interior.

Recommended companion objects: honed limestone, aged bronze, matte black ceramics. The warmth of the clementine tones performs exceptionally well against natural stone and weathered metal surfaces where the orange pulls warmth from cool mineral materials.

Use cases: living room statement rug · wall hanging · eclectic dining room anchor · maximalist bedroom focal point · gallery-style textile installation · bohemian entryway piece

Care & conservation

Hand-spun sheep wool is naturally soil-resistant and durable. For routine care shake gently outdoors and air periodically in indirect sunlight — avoid prolonged direct sun exposure to protect the saturated fuchsia and clementine pigments. Spot clean only with cool water and a mild pH-neutral wool detergent — never hot water or harsh chemicals as the organic dyes may bleed. Avoid high-suction vacuuming directly on the surface. Professional dry cleaning only if necessary — specialist in antique or oriental textiles only. Never machine wash or tumble dry.

This piece has survived decades of authentic use in the Andean highlands. With proper care it will outlast most things in your home.
