What Makes a Stuffed Animal Safe?

For parents and gift-givers buying for young children, construction details aren't just preferences — they're safety decisions. The way eyes are attached, what fill material is used, and how seams are reinforced all affect whether a piece is appropriate for a given age.

This guide explains exactly how Inspired Peru alpaca stuffed animals are built, what age each construction method is appropriate for, and what to look for when choosing a piece for a child. Eye Construction: Glass vs. Embroidered

We currently use two different eye construction methods across our collection, depending on the piece.

Glass safety eyes are used on our Cloud Touch bears and most of our current collection. Each eye is hand-set and securely anchored using a heavy-duty artisan anchoring system, individually installed and inspected before the piece ships. Products using glass safety eyes are rated for ages 3 and above.

Embroidered eyes — used on our Original Rainbow Alpaca Llama and a few other pieces — are stitched directly into the fabric, with no separate component to detach. We are actively working to expand embroidered-eye construction across more of our collection over time.

If you're shopping for an infant or a child who still mouths objects, consider products that use embroidered or hand-knitted eye construction, and always review the age recommendation listed on the product page.

What's Inside: Fill Material

Every Inspired Peru piece is filled with premium synthetic polyester fiberfill, selected specifically for structural resilience and shape retention. It holds its shape through years of daily use without compressing permanently. We never use cheap, unspecified fabric filler.

Construction & Seams

Each piece is hand-stitched by an individual artisan. Pieces are inspected before shipping.

Fiber Safety

Genuine baby alpaca fiber is naturally lanolin-free and dye-free, and free from synthetic finishing treatments. Many customers with mild skin sensitivities find it a gentle alternative to synthetic plush. As with any product, individual sensitivities vary, and we recommend consulting a healthcare provider if allergies are a significant concern.

Choosing the Right Piece by Age

Eye Construction Recommended Age Examples
Embroidered / hand-knitted No separate component to detach Original Rainbow Alpaca Llama and select pieces
Glass safety eyes, hand-set and securely anchored Ages 3+ Cloud Touch bears and most of our collection

Always check the specific age recommendation listed on each product page before purchasing for a young child.

Why Age Recommendations Matter

Age recommendations are based on construction details and intended use. A stuffed animal appropriate for a child over three may not be the best choice for an infant who still mouths objects. Children interact with toys differently at different developmental stages, which is why eye construction and age recommendations are directly connected. Always review the age recommendation listed on the individual product page before purchasing.

Caring for Your Alpaca Stuffed Animal

Spot clean gently with cool water and a mild, fragrance-free soap. Never machine wash or tumble dry. Reshape by hand while damp and allow to air dry flat. Genuine alpaca fiber retains its softness indefinitely with proper care.
